Hi, my name is Kelsie and I’m a PhD candidate at Cornell University in the Fiber Science and Apparel Design department. My research focuses on sustainability in fashion design, specifically how natural dyes are used and perceived in the industry. My background consists of a B.S. and M.S. degree from Kansas State University in apparel design and seven years of natural dye experience. My previous work consists of both quantitative colorfastness research and qualitative inquiry with natural dyers, apparel companies, and with consumers who have purchased naturally dyed products.
My research extends into filmmaking which I see as an important visual counterbalance to my written work. I find documentary filmmaking an excellent window into the world of natural dyes and textiles.
After the completion of my PhD degree in May 2020 I plan on becoming a tenure track professor in apparel design at a major research university. Focusing on sustainability research and teaching the next generation of apparel and textile industry professionals.
